Paper trading and the risk guard

Updated 2026-10-29

Paper trading lets you practise with pretend money at live exchange prices: no deposit, no exchange account and no API keys. It's the safe way to test a method, or your own judgement, before risking real money.

Opening a paper trade

There are three ways, all with the same form:

  • on the Paper trading page, pick any coin under New paper trade;
  • on any coin page, press Paper trade next to Set price alert;
  • on a signal, press Paper trade (the amount is pre-filled from your position size settings).

The buy happens at the coin's current live price. You choose the amount, a take-profit and a stop-loss (both optional). Paper trades are spot buys (long only), like the signals method.

How trades close

  • The trade sells by itself when the take-profit or stop-loss is reached, checked every few minutes on 5-minute exchange candles after your entry. If a candle touches both, it counts as the stop-loss. A price gap through a level fills at the opening price.
  • You can Sell now at the current price at any time.
  • Fees of 0.1% are charged on the buy and on the sell.
  • You start with a $1,000 practice balance; Start over sets any starting balance and clears the history.
  • Up to 50 trades can be open at once. Paper trades need a free account, so they can close while you're away.

The Paper trading page shows your practice balance, open and closed trades, win rate and today's result.

Position size calculator

The Size button on each signal works out how much to buy so that hitting your stop-loss loses only the share of your account you chose:

position = account × risk per trade ÷ stop-loss distance (never more than your largest position)

For example, with $1,000, 1% risk and a 2% stop, the position is $500: a stop-out loses about $10 plus fees. With the default largest position of 25%, it's capped at $250, so a stop-out loses about $5.

The risk guard

Set a daily loss limit (for example 3% of the account). Once your paper trades lose that much in a day, the Signals list is hidden until tomorrow, so one bad day doesn't turn into revenge trading. You can still choose Show anyway. The settings are on the Paper trading page.
